Sacred songs to soothe the soul

"This is the first time that I have ever done a singing workshop, and Brathay was a lovely introduction. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and all the songs that we sung. Your teaching is wonderfully relaxed and delightfully humorous, spot on. Great company too." British Folk, Brathay Hall, July 2018

Sacred Song encompasses an amazing mix of musical diversity: from the Black gospel church and the slave plantations of rural Southern USA, to Jewish Sephardic singing from Spain; from South African protest songs to New Zealand Maori hymns; from Corsican polyphony to the lush harmonies of the Russian Orthodox church; from the chants of the Taizé community to medieval plainsong; from the Georgian church to the Shaker community; and much more in between. We will learn several songs from some of these different traditions, all especially arranged for voice in unaccompanied harmony.

Brathay Hall
The weekend will draw on songs from a wide range of sources from across the globe. Singing sessions will consist of warm-ups, simple songs that bring instant rewards and also more complex songs in several parts that offer the rewarding challenges. There will also be opportunities to explore the local area and soak up summer sun.

Feedback from 2018's weekend at Brathay Hall:

"I enjoyed it all: an excellent balance between the singing, great songs, meeting and chatting with lovely people, good food and having a good stomp up a hill with views on Saturday afternoon."

"Great to have the time to learn so many new songs. I loved the humour – made it very relaxed and easier given that it was quite intensive therefore tiring, but also energising!"

"Quite frankly this was the best singing weekend that I've ever experienced. The choice of material and arrangements were great and the overall enjoyment has been amazing. Such a wonderful group of people."
