"I didn't know what to expect, not having sung since primary school days. But I loved the workshop! It didn't really hit me until I listened to the recordings you sent through. Your talent and enthusiasm are amazing and hugely appreciated by me." Participant on a previous Eastern European singing workshop

Sir Richard Arkwright, the great industrialist, commissioned Willersley Castle in the 1790s. You can still see many of the original features today. The Castle overlooks the Derwent Valley World Heritage site. There are plenty of excellent walks in the area and you will have time on Saturday afternoon to explore.

The main hotel has 30 bedrooms, extensive grounds and a heated indoor swimming pool. You can go on a virtual tour of the hotel, rooms and grounds on the Willersley Castle website.

Willersley Castle oval stairwell Learn songs from a range of Eastern European cultures and traditions: crunchy harmonies from the Balkans, Romanian lullabies, Czech gypsy passion, haunting chants from the Russian Orthodox church, gorgeous clashing harmonies from Georgia, mountain hollers from Macedonia and much more.

All songs will be taught by ear in the traditional way. No previous experience is necessary, just a love of singing. This will be a relaxed, informal and fun weekend of group harmony singing. You will be surprised and delighted by the rich and stunning harmonies we will produce in a relatively short time.

Old mill near Willersley Castle Chris has carefully chosen the songs which are all arranged for voices only. He teaches everything by ear so there is no need to read music.

Chris will make a recording of the workshop available free afterwards. This will remind you of the weekend and impress you with the sound we create together!

Feedback from 2018's weekend at Willersley Castle:

"I loved it! I enjoyed the selection of songs, the teaching, the company. I loved being able to have a great walk on the Saturday afternoon. Thanks for arranging the weather too!"

"The choice of songs was perfect and they way they eventually came together after some dodgy under-confident starts is pretty magical! It's also excellent to meet new people – the singing creates a real connection so even if it can feel daunting to come on a weekend not knowing many people, it's actually pretty easy and safe."

"It's always great to spend a weekend singing new and different songs and making such a fantastic sound after just a couple of days. I've especially enjoyed singing in different languages with songs from different traditions."
